Apologies for the link dump. We spent several more hours traveling yesterday than anticipated. I was amazed at how far failures in the air travel network cascade. Neither our origin nor our destination suffered from weather related closures or direct delays. All the same, our departure was delayed over two hours, the concourse was packed with a mass of humanity waiting for flights whose schedules were compressed by the delays, and we changed gates three times. The pressure to maximize profit through load and schedule optimization clearly yields an interconnected system that is semi-stable at best. If I didn’t indulge my fascination at this phenomenon, I’d succumb to the frustration that saw many of our fellow travelers abusing any and every airline and airport staffer within reach.
