I guess I would be more surprised at this story if an earlier wargaming effort specifically dealing with online attacks over at the DHS had gone better than it had. This latest attack is targeting the US Department of Commerce, more specifically the Bureau of Industry and Security.
Some sources are claiming tacit approval from the Chinese government. The exact ratio of attacks originating from Chinese networks isn’t specified in either article, however.
As far as they can tell, no BIS data has been compromised. And their response, to close their network, seems reasonable. There hasn’t been much follow up of this story, in the news, so one is left to assume the defense actually went better than the DHS exercise would have predicted.
