Podcast #8

Why do I do this? Maybe you were wondering. I’ll warn you up front, that the show runs just a bit long because of the answer, which takes around twenty minutes in the telling. Here’s the Cringely article I mentioned. News for the week includes DSL de-regulation, security notices for Gnome Evolution and GAIM Instant Messaging client, fingerprinting paper, and NY security breach disclosure law. Special bonus, my Mighty Mouse review.

  1. Well, it was Maciej Ceglowski in his Audioblogging Manifesto, who contended that audio content was not indexable and searchable. To be fair, at the time he wrote the piece, this may have been more true.

However, the question I was exploring was why audio versus text? Jon Gruber only writes, he doesn’t podcast, and yet he is still one of my favorites. I’ve just been trying to think through what makes the act of recording audio different, at least for me, enough from writing for it to be a worthwhile endeavor in its own right.

  2. I can only speak for myself… If you did not record audio and only wrote the text chances are I would not read it. Not that it isn’t worth reading, it is just the fact that I often do not have the time to sit down and read it. By recording the audio it gives me the chance to listen while engaged in something else not too mentally taxing, like work (ha ha) or when I’m at the gym. That is the worth to me. Since you are the one producing this content it is important that there is some value in it for you. Whatever your reason, whether it is having another forum to express yourself or because you enjoy it, be sure it is a good reason. Keep up the good work.

  3. Thanks, Jobble. Good comments. Rest assured, my ruminations on the topic are also motivated by keeping the content of the audio focused and the best I can make it. As I said, it would be easy to just put out another tech news podcast but that’s not what I want to do. I don’t want to get lost in that crowd and that’s not all I have to say. Thanks for hanging in while I continue to find my voice.
