- Should timestamps be captured? If so, when (e.g., sentences, paragraphs)? Should the transcriptions be delineated as lists or broken into standard structure? --Michael Ahlers 15:14, 29 June 2009 (EDT)
- Timestamps are unnecessary, the text is more important than any direct correlation to the audio. I will be revising and building on the transcriptions to make up the book. The book is not intended to be merely a transcription of the audio, transcription is just a first step. --cmdln 17:27, 29 June 2009 (EDT)
- I may include these on the first pass. The content volume is substantial and chunking it somehow would help. Breaking into sections by time is logical. --[Si]dragon 19:42, 1 July 2009 (EDT)
- I am not strictly opposed and for the purpose of helping to break up the work on a lengthier piece, what you suggest makes sense. Not sure how it will evolve as I take the transcriptions forward into the rewriting/editing process. May still be helpful to consider for section breaks. --cmdln 20:08, 1 July 2009 (EDT)
- Standard boilerplate should not be included, but how about the subject prefaces (i.e., “this episode is a…”)? --Michael Ahlers 15:28, 29 June 2009 (EDT)
- All I am after is the text of the Inner Chapters themselves. The forematter is pretty specific to the podcast format and will need to be replaced/rewritten with material suitable for target formats such as print/electronic book and podio book. --cmdln 17:27, 29 June 2009 (EDT)
- Is there a guide for using the full set of tools for organization and conventions, like the Category special link? --cmdln 17:55, 1 July 2009 (EDT)
- One good starting point is the Help:Category article at the Wikipedia Meta-Wiki. That site, if I understand correctly, lays the foundation for many organization principles (among other topics) used by Wikipedia. --[Si]dragon 18:03, 1 July 2009 (EDT)
- From my experience, the structure I see forming under Special:Categories is spot-on. --[Si]dragon 18:20, 1 July 2009 (EDT)
Suggestions
- Listeners using iPhones or iPod Touches with the latest firmware may find the instant 30-second rewind feature immensely helpful. --Michael Ahlers 15:27, 29 June 2009 (EDT)
- Added this to the main page. --cmdln 17:55, 1 July 2009 (EDT)
- A page explaining how to use the new templates would be helpful. Just looking over their use on Debugging makes a certain sort of sense, in context, but some examples and links would be great. --cmdln 10:26, 2 July 2009 (EDT)
- I was until recently a manager of a transcription company; I produced most of the transcripts for National Public Radio in 2008. We used the free Express Scribe software from NCH, an Australian firm. I highly recommend this software, available for a few platforms at that link. For the record, I am not affiliated whatsoever with NCH or with the coders of this software. I would also be happy to offer basic advice and support for the transcription project here. --MishnayicHacker 07:18, 6 August 2009 (EDT)
- Thanks for the suggestion. I took a look and Express Scribe does indeed appear to run on Windows, OS X and Linux and is free. For those without iPhones or iPods running the latest OS, this looks like a good choice. It doesn't do speech recognition but allows control of audio playback amenable to manual transcription. --cmdln 10:59, 6 August 2009 (EDT)
