There is no hacker word of the week this week.

The feature this week is what I thought might be a delightful surprise, where a frequent guest of the podcast over these past six years interviews me in honor of my recent podcast anniversary. In the interview, Data General’s mini-computers figured prominently in my early memories. In discussion of adversity and its role in pedagogy, I refer to Spolsky’s Law of Leaky Abstraction. In considering the future cost of technology choices, my interviewer referred to the Final Cut Pro X kerfuffle. The MC Chris hit, Fett’s Vette was suggested in response to my Dad’s ’63 Corvette which he has to this day. Robert Asprin’s Myth Adventures books were some of the earliest genre fiction in which my mom got me interested. All of my enjoyment of science fiction was inspired by her.

Towards the end of the interview, we chatted about one of the higher profile projects, Commotion, at my new day job. I gave the example of AWMN as a mesh that did and still does do more than just share internet access. Turning to the state of podcasting, I cited Nathan Lowell as an excellent example of an author who both gets the power of different media and who has used newer media to incrementally build modest success. My other podcast, with which I am experiencing trouble getting into iTunes, is the Living Proof Brew Cast.

Tiffany has spoke and participated too at hacker cons like BlackHat and DEF CON.
There is no new hacker word of the week this week.

The feature this week is an interview with one of my very favorite authors, Rudy Rucker. Rudy is also a mathematician and a computer scientist. It was “Spaceland” his notional sequel to “Flatland” that first got me interest in his work. I also was immensely intrigued by his non-fiction work, “The Lifebox, the Seashell, and the Soul“, which I’ve reviewed here previously.

In addition to discussing his latest books–the duology, “Postsingular” and “Hylozoic“, and the re-released Ware Tetralogy–we also touch on his thoughts on the limits of VR, chaos and complexity, the state of computing, the role of the alien where Rudy mentions his novel “The Secret of Life“, continuing the story of “Hylozoic” where I mentioned a previous interview with Tor.com on the subject (on page 172 of this PDF, from July of 2009), 3D printing and natural gnarl, and Rudy’s upcoming books.

On the topic of 3D printing, it was Scott Summit’s talk I was thinking of but couldn’t recall. The architect of the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Bilbao that Rudy mentioned was Frank Gehry. He also mentioned the design group, Nervous System, who uses the Processing library for their 3D printed objects.

If you want a taste for the story about Turing, Rudy has released three short stories that may make up the first three chapters of a new novel: “The Imitation Game“, “The Skug” and “Tangier Routines“.

Updated: I re-exported the audio for the episode. I’ve replaced the original audio file with the new version that should fix the missing intro and outro material.

In the intro, a heads up that changes are coming on two to three weeks as I complete the migration of my podcast production to Linux. A will announce a firm date once I have one and give a better run down of the potential impacts to the listener, hopefully minimal. Also, a clarification on the giveaway of the CD Randy gave me. All you need to do is email me between now and the end of the month and say you’d like the CD. If I get more than one response, I’ll pick one at random. Lastly, I have signed copies of the first two volumes of Ed’s graphic novel, WIZZYWIG. The next person to qualify for a custom nerd merit badge, whether they have one already or not, gets the books.

There is no new hacker word of the week this week.

The feature this week is the interview I recorded with Ed Piskor at the Small Press Expo. In the interview we mention Nedroid (that’s the beartato), 2600, Off the Hook, Ed’s talk at HOPE, the documentary “Freedom Downtime“, Chris Ware, Daniel Clowes, Charles Burns, and Tommy Blacha creator and write of Metalocalypse.

<itunes:summary>This is a feature cast, an episode of The Command Line Podcast.

The feature this week is an interview Josh Stearns of Free Press about the Comcast-NBC acquisition.
It’s part two of an interview my friend, Kevin, conducted for his great podcast, Life After Law School. You can listen to part one here in case you missed it the first time around. I really enjoyed this conversation, Kevin is a thoughtful host and interviewer. He also did a fantastic job on the show notes for both parts. I had no idea I made reference to so many great projects and interesting people.

If anyone else wants an interview, I am always happy to oblige, both during my hiatus (family commitments allowing) and after. Just shoot me a note at feedback@thecommandline.net.

My friend Dan has finally finished the herculean task of uploading an edited and high resolution video of my recent interview with Cory Doctorow during the final stop of his MAKERS book tour at Philcon. Dan shot this video on his new HD flip that he bought for the occasion while I conducted the interview. He also took a bunch of great photos. Thanks, Dan!

The video is available in a few formats, including Ogg Theora. It clocks in at just under forty minutes so the HD version is a hefty download. The Ogg and standard definition mpeg versions are much more manageable.

Apologies in advance for the audio, you’ll need to crank it up a bit though I imagine the video may help at softer volumes with understanding Cory’s responses. For those familiar with my previous out of the studio recording struggles, I have a new bit of gear on its way that should help: a Giant Squid Lab mic that I can use as a pair of lavaliers, or clip-on, microphones.

I’ve mentioned a couple of times in the podcast that this coming weekend I’ll be at Philcon. The sole reason I decided to brave the two and a half hour trek was the chance to catch up with Cory Doctorow during his very short US book tour for his new novel, MAKERS. I just confirmed the interview today and sometime between now and o’dark early Saturday morning, I’ll be drafting my interview questions for Cory. I’ll focus primarily on the new novel but will include questions about his self published short story collection project, With a Little Help, and possibly some of his other upcoming releases.

If you have a question for Cory that you’d like me to consider including in the interview, please be sure to send it to me at feedback@thecommandline.net before Saturday morning.

If you are going to be at Philcon, feel to drop me a note or come and find me. I’d post a schedule but I am neither a volunteer nor a participant at this convention and I cannot find a programming schedule on their web site.

In the intro, letting you know that part one of a two part interview with me is up at the Life after Law School podcast.

There is no listener feedback this week.

Due to the length of the feature, there is no hacker word of the week this week.

The feature this week is an interview with Randal Schwartz. I first met Randal through his talk on his experience being snared under one of the problematic computer fraud and abuse laws. We don’t discuss that topic in the interview but if you are curious, he recommends his appearance on the Security Catalyst podcast and his interview with Stephen Euin Cobb on the Future and You. Randal also mentions the Squeak by Example book in the interview which is available as a free electronic edition and a print-on-demand edition. You can also hear Randal on the excellent FLOSS Weekly podcast which I also recommend for its consistently superb coverage of free software and open source projects of all varieties.

In the intro I point out that I have been using Herdict Web for a while now. I encourage you to check it out, as well. This is one of the projects Prof. Zittrain has started to tackle the challenges discussed in his book.

Listener Feedback this week is from Nido who sent a link to the Hacking at Random 2009 event coming up in The Netherlands in August. There’s plenty of time to plan if this is within reasonable travel distance and looks like a great hacker gathering. They also have an audio promo, which I share, that has all the details.

The hacker word of the week this week is DWIM.

The feature this week is an interview with Harvard Law professor, Jonathan Zittrain, where we discuss his latest book, “The Future of the Internet and How to Stop It“, as well as his work more generally. I mentioned a TED talk given by Clay Shirky during the interview but in searching for the link I was clearly thinking of Shirky’s Web 2.0 Expo talk. Both talks are worth checking out.
