New Version of nmap Released

nmap is a tried and true security tool, invaluable for discovering what is open and accessible on a network or even just on a single host. This update according to Slashdot looks pretty significant, both in core capabilities like improved system finger printing as well as in conveniences like an expanded set of bundled scripts and an easier to use graphical front end.

nmap is also free software, licensed under the GPL, and comes with the equally useful netcat utility which is invaluable not just for security applications but also general network troubleshooting. I expect nmap to get revved in most Linux package repositories pretty quickly though there are binaries available for many OSes and you can of course always just build from source.
