Helping New Musicians Navigate 360 Deals, Online Piracy

Despite the inflammatory lede, this In the News piece (tweeted by digiconbill) that quotes Billy Bragg actually does a fair job, or at least Billy does, of considering the chummed waters between labels and pirates that many new artists face.

What Bragg is talking about is education and advocacy, two things of which I am a big fan, and is currently on the board of Featured Artists Coalition. Reading through the FAC charter, this seems like a reasonable mandate, to help artists in understanding and exercising their creative rights.

I really like Bragg’s concluding thoughts around the “artist-to-fan model”, seeing the direct engagement between creator and audience as a valid approach and focusing on constructive aspects, like building better filters to enable that.
