TCLP 2008-10-22 Inner Chapter: Emotional Investment

This is a feature cast.

In the intro, the reveal of the new audio promo. I mentioned that I’d reveal the winners and then forgot to do so. I’ll announce them here, Lutz and Paul are the two winners and I will make arrangements directly with them to send them their prizes. Thanks to everyone who participated. You can check out the final product at http://thecommandline.net/promos/.

The hacker word of the week this week is deliminator.

The feature this week is a new Inner Chapter on the topic of emotional investment and how it can affect, for good and ill, our experience of hacking.

I had to chuckle at your choice of the word of the day. That word was coined accidentally by one of my Perl instructors as he was describing Perl’s “split” function. We both started using it online when we were answering questions about split, and apparently Eric Raymond picked that up for the Jargon Dictionary.

Thanks for sharing that little bit of personal history. It really highlights how ad hoc so much of our jargon is.
