EU Sneaking in Three Strikes Rule

6 July, 2008 (15:23) | Hacktivism | By: cmdln

Despite constant question and criticism, looks like this rule is sneaking through the EU parliament as part of a broader telecoms package. When the idea was drafted as its own bill, it was roundly rejected. Boing Boing has also picked up this story. The proposed rule would cut off internet access to a potential infringer on the third complaint.

Timing appears to be critical, this is going to vote tomorrow, July 17th. ORG has more information on taking action.

I like Cory’s idea for balancing the scales. Make the rule cut both ways.

Cory’s idea doesn’t go quite far enough. To be really equivalent, we should permanently cut off the internet access of any company that HAS BEEN ACCUSED of sending out three erroneous copyright notices. Fair is fair, after all.
