Wired’s Chris Anderson has a thoughtful post on social network as a feature of proper sites. I think this meshes well with my past rants and discussions of social networks and spaces. Given the view that social network should be more integrated into other sites and applications, I think there is a stronger driver for compatibility and portability of profiles and friend data. This shifts the focus back on what you are doing and the specific context in which you are interacting and less on the data and relationships.
