Felten on Reports from Midem Conference About Labels Going MP3

I’ve avoided commenting on this my own self because I’ll truly believe it when I see it. Some of the notable past efforts have been with marginal content or on top of services that had other issues that I saw as barriers to whole sale adoption.

Professor Felten has weighed in on the reporting about the industry at least partially considering a change. I hadn’t thought about the logical conundrum into which the labels had argued their way until he pointed it out. I now feel a bit of schadenfreude, for one, but also some concerns at how the knottiness he describes may hinder this coming to pass.

It doesn’t sway me from my wait and see stance, but it is food for thought. I’ll definitely be looking for evidence of the paradox he points out, along with signs that the architecture of these old models are finally starting to crack.
