Voluntary DRM in Public Libraries

Posted by cmdln on January 18th, 2007

Clearly as public libraries start to incorporate digital media into their collections, the issue of criminal piracy comes along with it. They’ve dealt well with fair use in the past, where physical architecture, that is the cost of photo copying an entire work, presented a certain amount of friction that worked in their favor. It is understandable that they would want to try to be a good digital citizen now that architecture, and norms too, have shifted to make that balance harder to maintain.

But this is appalling. In the absence of local or federal guidelines, this is the worst possible choice.
